ABOUT THIS SHOW

The Cedar Cultural Center kicks off its 35th year with a special concert celebrating some of the bands that have made its West Bank neighborhood such a hotbed of the local music scene. Headlining will be rock/reggae/punk/ska favorites The Mubbla Buggs, featuring the Cedar's own Eric Hohn (sound tech since 1997) and Jared Hemming (volunteer coordinator & event manager since 2016). Also performing will be kAt Band Project, featuring acclaimed vocalist Kathleen Johnson (Prince, The Petersons, Keri Noble, Robert Robinson), and Joe Roberto's Poverty Hash.

THE MUBBLA BUGGS

Starting off as a power pop punk band, The Mubbla Buggs were formed by Minneapolis Central High friends Nathan Anderson (guitar, vocals) and Eric Hohn (bass, vocals). Childhood friend Pat Mavity (guitar, vocals) soon joined to complete the band. Eventually drummer Michael Bland was recruited into the band bringing heavy dance beats, until he was discovered by fellow Minneapolis Central High School musician Prince to become drummer for the New Power Generation.

The Buggs made the rounds in the Minneapolis music scene of the mid to late 80’s into the 90’s and beyond. Then played extensively throughout the Twin Cities, frequenting The Uptown Bar, The Cabooze, 7th Street Entry, First Avenue and their home club 400 Bar.

In 2023, drummer Jared Hemming (drums) joined the band, and they released their video "Colouramic," made by director Paul Irmiter.  Garnering the attention of the Winzerfest music committee of Besigheim, the Buggs played in Germany last fall and have been busy performing ever since, bringing their own eclectic rock music to a variety of Minnesota venues.

POVERTY HASH

Now calling the Twin Cities home, Connecticut transplant Joe Roberto is the driving force behind Poverty Hash. As the principal songwriter, Joe took his 20 plus years of performing, song writing, and life experience and poured all of it into the music Poverty Hash plays. What emerged is the hauntingly beautiful imagery of songs like “Blood Stained Hands”, a warning to all bar loudmouths, contrasted by “Rally Cry”, a semi autobiographical portrait of the songwriter.
