Dear Cedar Friends,

As the COVID-19 pandemic continued to spread globally in early 2020, The Cedar closed its performance hall on March 14, 2020. With a regular schedule of 200+ shows a year, we projected a loss of over 70% of our revenue stream. In response, we laid off 80% of our staff and created a reduced capacity plan with four part-time staff. As the pandemic lingered on and uncertainty set in, concerns rose about whether live music would ever return to the way it had been. Not only did musicians consider the possibility of a bleak future and career changes, but event staff, sound techs, roadies, promoters, and others pondered the same. Our patrons could not enjoy live music and our hundreds of volunteers were separated from their Cedar community.

To help keep the music industry alive, we created The Cedar Public Access Channel: an online content stream. Through this program, we were able to support artists in a new way and continue to engage our audiences.

Shortly after this program's inception, on May 25, 2020 George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis. This shocking event led to the realities of racial injustice resonating around the world. We at The Cedar decided to be more intentional about racial justice, too. While staff had been participating in bi-weekly, internal diversity and inclusion training and discussions for the last few years, sessions were paused due to the pandemic. Despite these past efforts, we were compelled to write a racial equity statement and to plan new ways to be intentional about our values and mission.

One area we could be intentional about racial justice was through current programming. Our 2020 cohort of The Artist Collective was instrumental in this. The Collective is a group of six Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) artists who advise us on making our operations and programming more inclusive, and who curate shows representing BIPOC communities in the Twin Cities. After the murder of George Floyd, The Collective was galvanized to make programming that addressed the systems that created the backdrop for this horrifying event. The Collective was motivated to explore anti-Blackness, police violence, and interracial unity between Hmong, Somali, and other Black communities as this tragedy mobilized many people around the globe. We are grateful to The Collective for realizing The Cedar’s new commitments and for addressing them through programming on The Cedar Public Access Channel.

Alongside these major lessons, we have also learned that you are our support system in difficult times. You are our community, our audiences, and our donors that helped us pull through a difficult and unpredictable year. You provided us with care and support through financial contributions, letters, and cards. We know The Cedar means a great deal to so many of you. We made it through 2020, and we intend to carry forward all that we have learned.

We cannot thank you enough for your support. As we plan for the future, we hope that you will continue the journey with us. Though difficult to project anything at this point, we currently plan to start reduced-capacity shows in fall of 2021. We move forward, slowly but surely, knowing that we will make it through, and with you alongside us, we will begin again.

Sincerely,

2020 HIGHLIGHTS

COVID-19 did not have dominion over the entirety of 2020: for the greater part of three months we still held in-person shows at The Cedar. With performances from the explosive Canadian folk outfit, Le Vent du Nord, hometown bluegrass favorites Pert Near Sandstone, beloved local musicians performing Drone Not Drones, and Cuban jazz masters Omar Sosa and Yilian Cañizares, January to March of last year was much like January to March of years prior. We hosted 29 concerts on The Cedar stage before we closed our hall.

The Cedar Public Access Channel

I feel like art is what helps these moments live in history. If artists weren’t documenting the Civil Rights movement or any of these movements that happen in our country or around the world, we wouldn’t have context for what was going on at the time. It’s the artist’s job to document these moments.
— The Outsiders, Multimedia Artists and Community Organizers

The creation of The Cedar Public Access Channel is very special to us. It is emblematic of the love that community members near and far have for The Cedar and our mission. Our staff members created this platform as a way to continue programming even when our audience members could not visit The Cedar physically. Inspiration for this project came from early public broadcasting efforts designed to fill gaps between commercial media with independent programming; The Cedar Public Access Channel takes it a step further. The online content stream is a platform where artists can present low-cost, independently produced media hosted on our YouTube channel and Facebook page. As of December 2020, the stream has also continued to broadcast to local viewers via Saint Paul Neighborhood Network (SPNN).

The program was founded because of donations made during GiveMN’s #GiveAtHomeMN campaign which was held from May 1 to May 8. We would like to thank the following people for their generous support at a time when we still did not know the duration of our hall’s closure.

Special thanks to

Strangely enough, I dreamt that I was flying. It was very strange. It was peaceful, but it was also pretty strange. I thought it was really encouraging to have a dream like that where in the midst of all this turmoil, I am taking flight.

The truth is that social movements have always existed and without them there are no rights, because rights are achieved marching in the streets... So what we always demand from an artistic stance is justice for our fallen heroes through marches and demonstrations, and for all those who have been riddled by violence in the streets.

One of the good things about when everything falls away from you, metaphorically and literally, is that you have to take inventory of where your strength is, where your balance is… to move solidly from the places [you] can and not further disrupt things that are already in motion.

THE CEDAR COMMISSIONS

An annual must-attend for fans of new and exciting music.
— The Growler, February 2020

All photos taken by Free Truth Media, with the exception of Beatriz Correia Lima’s session photographed by Pallav Kumar

The Cedar Commissions is a flagship program commissioning new works by Minnesota-based artists with support from the Jerome Foundation. Since the program’s launch in 2010, the Cedar Commissions has supported more than 60 emerging composers and musicians, resulting in very innovative and thought-provoking work.

The Cedar Commissions has followed a rather regimented schedule since its inception. The selected artists work closely with members of The Cedar staff in order to share their ideas. The staff act as sounding boards allowing the artists’ ideas to materialize further. Additionally, artists work with other collaborators and mentors to make their creations a reality.

In 2020, the six selected artists of our tenth cohort weren’t able to adhere to the previous framework due to COVID-19. The standard expectations of music creation such as in-person collaboration were not nearly as attainable, for example. Also, instead of live shows, each artist recorded their work at The Cedar for a film and sound crew in an empty room, and those performances debuted virtually this spring. In a year when the world was dealing with a global pandemic and the Twin Cities was reeling from the reality of police violence and calls for racial justice, each of our artists managed to create something beautiful to share. That is not an easy feat, by any means.

The Cedar’s communications team, Marketing and Communications Manager Aida Shahghasemi and Marketing and Programs Assistant Shasa Sartin sat down with each of the artists for ‘spotlight’ interviews. They discussed the artists’ processes creating their commissions, including the hurdles of COVID-19. You can find those interviews here.

If you missed the premieres of the Cedar Commissions, you can still view them here for free.

ARTIST COLLECTIVE

Power is not something that can be granted to communities. It already exists in communities. It’s about channeling that power.

The Artist Collective is a group of six BIPOC artists who are commissioned by The Cedar to help us in our goal to be more inclusive in our arts programming and operations. These artists have either participated in The Cedar Commissions or Midnimo and then began working as paid year-round curatorial artists and cultural liaisons with The Cedar. They actively guide The Cedar’s efforts in offering access to artists within their communities.

The members of the 2020 Artist Collective were Deeq Abdi, Ifrah Mansour, Tou Saiko Lee, Alexandra Buffalohead, Lady Midnight, and Ritika Ganguly. Ifrah Mansour and Ritika Ganguly were 2019 Artist Collective members, too.

This program began in January 2019, making 2020 its second year. With a major inhibitor, COVID-19, the participation of the Artist Collective looked a bit different than in its opening year. The Artist Collective has been integral to the bloom of The Cedar Public Access Channel: they are the ones who have curated most of the episodes! Of our first nine episodes, six of them were curated by the Artist Collective members. Our last 2020 episode was titled “Tea With The Collective” and all six members participated together for a discussion on their time as members of the Artist Collective.

Outside of The Cedar Public Access Channel, The Collective shared knowledge about best practices for The Cedar to adopt in order to be a better, more culturally responsive organization. We are grateful for their contributions in 2020 and hope to return to this level of involvement in 2022.

Artist Support

Through 2020, The Cedar had the honor of experiencing glimmers of hope with the gifts of music our local artists sent to us. As we worked through an unpredictable year, we asked the public to support us through donations, and many artists stepped in to help by creating promotional videos highlighting their support for The Cedar. Looking back at the content they created over the year, it brought us such joy to see what an amazing collection of little home videos we have of all the artists that helped our fundraising efforts. To all our artists: thank you for the light you brought in the midst of much darkness. We are so very thankful and hope that we can experience you all creating vibrations within the halls of The Cedar, in real life, sometime soon.

2020 Financial Report

The pandemic's onset forced the closure of our concert hall. Fearing the worst and out of concern for The Cedar's long term survival, we quickly took drastic cost-cutting measures that included furloughing 80% of our staff and creating a reduced operating model. We also stopped investing in our venue and delayed needed repairs and upgrades. Our quick action along with a generous outpouring of support for our COVID-19 campaign, GTMD campaign, and winter appeal, in conjunction with the acceptance of the PPP loan allowed us to end 2020 without additional debt despite losing around 70% of our revenue.

We now prepare ourselves for a new operating model in 2021 and 2022. We need to restart investing in facilities and operations to support our community by providing a safe venue for live music. With our reopening, we will also be helping our neighboring businesses return to a better state.
